I was commenting on a Catholic messageboard that I was going to make dinner for some priests in the archdiocese, but that one of the priests has Celiac and must eat gluten-free food-- I was asking for any recipe suggestions, especially for a gluten-free barbeque sauce.
Someone responded, "Celiac? Is that like being a Marionite?"

I have Celiac Disease, but it does not affect me when I take Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. The Host ceases to be bread and becomes the Body of Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ.
However, at any other time, consuming any wheat or bread produts is a big No-no.

Hi Paula-- I'm sure you've heard plenty about the difference between substance and accidents of transubstantiation, so I won't belabor the topic here. No one teaches Aristotelian metaphysics anymore anyway, so it's hard for us 21st Century Catholics to wrap our heads around. In any measure, I'm glad to hear that having Celiac doesn't prevent your communion with the Lord. Thanks for the note!

Perla, your comment comes as a breath of fresh air in this sea of unbelief and skepticism.
If one were to believe that the accidents of the Host continue to act on one's person the same as real bread, then real bread it remains along with Our Lord's presence. And if this were the case, then one must believe in Consubstantiation like Martin Luther.
